Bible Class – Romans 15

In this inspiring Bible class led by Cole Tuck on December 28, 2025, we dove deeper into Romans 8, exploring the profound contrast between living according to the flesh and being led by the Spirit. Paul reminds us that through Christ’s sacrifice, our mortal bodies, dead because of sin, receive life through the indwelling Holy Spirit, promising resurrection and immortality. We are debtors not to the flesh, which leads to spiritual death, but to the Spirit, who empowers us to put sinful deeds to death and live eternally. Most powerfully, those led by the Spirit are adopted as God’s children, crying “Abba, Father, free from fear and slavery, becoming heirs with Christ. Even present sufferings pale in comparison to the coming glory, as all creation groans in anticipation of redemption and freedom. This lesson calls us to embrace our identity as beloved children of God, finding hope amid trials through the Spirit’s transformative power.

Talking Points

  1. The Spirit Gives Life to Mortal Bodies (Romans 8:9-11)
    • Our bodies are dead due to sin, but the Spirit brings life because of righteousness.
    • The same Spirit that raised Jesus will raise us—true life comes only through God’s indwelling presence.
    • Every breath and day is a gift from God; separation from Him is impossible for true existence.
  2. Obligation to the Spirit, Not the Flesh (Romans 8:12-13)
    • Living by the flesh leads to spiritual death (eternal separation from God), not just physical death.
    • By the Spirit, we put to death sinful deeds—our only options are to kill sin or let sin kill us spiritually.
    • We can’t overcome sin alone; the Spirit empowers victory—we come to God broken, and He transforms us.
  3. Led by the Spirit: Sons and Daughters of God (Romans 8:14-17)
    • True children of God are those led by the Spirit, not defined by lineage, background, or appearance.
    • We’ve received a spirit of adoption, not slavery—crying “Abba, Father” with intimacy and confidence.
    • As adopted children, we’re heirs with Christ: inheriting eternal life, the kingdom, and glory (if we suffer with Him).
  4. From Fear to Family: Slave vs. Son
    • Slaves live in fear of punishment; sons live in love and security.
    • God adopts us into His family—no fear for those in relationship with Him as Father.
    • Healthy fear (respect) remains, but perfect love casts out tormenting fear.
  5. Present Sufferings vs. Future Glory (Romans 8:18-25)
    • All sufferings are not worthy to be compared to the glory revealed in us.
    • Creation itself groans under the curse of sin (from the Garden), eagerly awaiting redemption with God’s children.
    • Like childbirth pains leading to joy, current trials give way to incomparable freedom and glory.
  6. Practical Encouragement
    • Guilt is a gift from the Spirit—signaling room for repentance; resisting it hardens the heart.
    • Heaven’s exact details may vary in our imaginations, but the path there (through Christ) unites us.
