Proverbs: Wisdom That Changes the Way We Live

Proverbs: Wisdom That Changes the Way We Live

On Sunday morning, October 4, 2026, Cole Tuck continued the Avenue T Bible class study in Proverbs, exploring practical wisdom and the choices that shape our lives.  The lesson emphasized that the teaching of the wise is a “fountain of life” because it helps us recognize and avoid paths that lead toward harm and death. Proverbs presents wisdom as more than information; it is knowledge put into action. A truly wise person does not simply know what is right; he or she lives according to that knowledge.

The class examined the contrast between good understanding and a treacherous way of life, noting that many of life’s difficulties can be made harder by choices we make ourselves. Proverbs challenges us to consider which path we are choosing and whether our decisions are producing unnecessary conflict and hardship.

Cole also discussed the importance of faithful messages and correction. A message may sometimes be uncomfortable or difficult to hear, but faithful correction can ultimately bring healing. Proverbs warns against rejecting discipline and reproof while encouraging humility and a willingness to accept correction.

The class then moved into Proverbs 14, considering the picture of the wise woman who builds her house rather than tearing it down. The discussion connected upright living with genuinely fearing the Lord and emphasized that our behavior demonstrates what we truly believe about God.

This study in Proverbs offers a practical challenge: Are we merely people who know about wisdom, or are we people who actually live wisely?

Talking Points

  1. Wisdom can protect us from destructive paths — The teaching of the wise helps us recognize and avoid things that can lead to harm.
  2. Life is already difficult enough — Our choices can either make life’s path harder or help us navigate it wisely.
  3. Wisdom is knowledge in action — Knowing what is right and actually doing what is right are two different things.
  4. Knowing Scripture does not automatically make us wise — Biblical knowledge must influence how we live.
  5. Faithful messages can bring healing — Truth may initially be uncomfortable, but faithful correction can produce healing.
  6. Rejecting discipline has consequences — Proverbs challenges us to receive correction rather than resist it.
  7. Our companions influence us — Walking with wise people encourages wisdom, while companionship with fools brings harm.
  8. God’s hatred of evil is connected to His love — Sin creates separation from God, and His opposition to evil reflects His desire for relationship with us.
  9. Our actions reveal our view of God — Upright living demonstrates a genuine fear of the Lord; devious living demonstrates the opposite.
  10. Wisdom builds rather than destroys — Proverbs 14 challenges us to consider whether our choices are building up our families, relationships, faith, and lives.
